Summer 2019 at 701 CCA

When I found out I was going to be an intern at 701 CCA, I was incredibly excited for the opportunity as I'm finishing a degree in Fine Arts and had heard of this experience from a professor. Being able to work in an art gallery environment and assist with projects that aided in the organization’s marketing and outreach to the community has really been invaluable to me.

Overall, I feel as though my time with 701 CCA was well spent and incredibly meaningful. From the start I was tasked with projects that directly impacted the organization and could see the fruit of my labors immediately, even small tasks I was happy to complete because I felt like everything I did had purpose. I would love to continue working in this field and investing in communities via arts nonprofits, and this internship has given me the skills and confidence to begin building this career.

Winter at 701 CCA During the winter break of 18-19, I interned at 701 CCA. Hannah Shepard, being the only paid employee and the director, is the mom and the dad of the art center. Everything 701 CCA related is her baby, and I am so glad I could be a part of the journey during the two too-short months. There were a few things going on during this time period. The gallery was closed to the public for a period of time so that we could all deinstall the exhibiting items and put the new ones in. That was my favorite time. It was a process that transforms a space from telling one story to another. Mood and emotions changed as the objects, and even lightings changed. I had my best afternoon here in the gallery during that time. It was the first week of the new semester, and I was scheduled from 11-2. The installation was about 80 percent finished. My Spring 2019 Internship!

My 701 CCA Experience When Hannah offered me the position as one of the spring interns for 701 CCA, I was so excited. At the first intern meeting in February, I met the other two interns, Cole and Erich, and we discussed what we would be working on during the next several months. I was happy to hear that there were opportunities to try different things regarding installation, marketing and social media, and events. During the first week of the internship, I worked to organize the preexisting donor database that was a compilation of records and documents from the past ten years of 701 CCA. Over the next few weeks, I learned how to use MailChimp, post 701 CCA events on local online calendars, draft content for the youth summer workshops and more. I learned a lot about the day to day communications that are essential to the organization. Meet Your Interns

Our first intern is Rachel Saran! She is currently a student at University of South Carolina studying Philosophy and Art History. Rachel first got experience at 701 CCA by volunteering through the installation of the SC Fellows exhibit. Her focused interests in the intersection of law, philosophy, and art have allowed her to work on different behind-the-scenes projects at 701 CCA involved in the logistics of running a gallery. Rachel's interests in the operational tasks around the gallery have given her a chance to work with the installations, policies and grants, and assisting in operating events and receptions! Rachel hopes to continue to volunteer at 701 CCA past the expiration of the internship, as she feels that 701 CCA has afforded her uniquely important learning experiences she can carry through her career.
