Spring 2019 Internship

I was really happy to have the opportunity to work here as I had heard things about it from friends who volunteered for a long time. Being in the space and getting to work with the install and uninstall process was something that I was looking forward to the most and proved to be as rewarding of an experience as I hoped it would be.
Getting to come in and help put up art by real recognized artists and meeting people in the arts community was something I wasn’t expecting to happen as much as it did. Actually being able to talk to these people doing this work professionally is something that helped me to appreciate just how much goes into these organizations and the process overall.
Working here was also a good thing for my resume. Personally, it gave me time to create professional designs and to hone my skills with website design. Being able to be the one to redesign the 701 press packet, relatively soon to the time I started, was assuring that I would truly gain experience. I also got a chance to work with automated mailing systems and different aspects of the work that goes on in galleries. Overall, I am very grateful for the skills I learned and time I spent with 701.

Summer at 701 CCA

701 Center for Contemporary Art has been working nonstop all summer to create a series of fun, interactive, and educational experiences when it comes to the art world. 701 CCA held a concert, an artist talk, two receptions and exhibitions, and, by the end of the summer, held six kids workshops. This internship truly has been such an eye-opening experience, and each of us has gained so much knowledge in several areas in the art world. I never will take for granted just strolling into a gallery now and seeing all the artwork, and not appreciate all the labor that goes into how the artwork just "appears" there. This summer has been quite a whirlwind, but working for a nonprofit art gallery has truly been rewarding. I really have enjoyed knowing I have played a role, even if it may be a small one, in someone else's enjoyment, education, and entertainment. I hope the pictures below give you a small insight into the behind the scenes of our internship so far this summer. ...

Meet Your Interns

Our first intern is Rachel Saran! She is currently a student at University of South Carolina studying Philosophy and Art History. Rachel first got experience at 701 CCA by volunteering through the installation of the SC Fellows exhibit. Her focused interests in the intersection of law, philosophy, and art have allowed her to work on different behind-the-scenes projects at 701 CCA involved in the logistics of running a gallery. Rachel's interests in the operational tasks around the gallery have given her a chance to work with the installations, policies and grants, and assisting in operating events and receptions! Rachel hopes to continue to volunteer at 701 CCA past the expiration of the internship, as she feels that 701 CCA has afforded her uniquely important learning experiences she can carry through her career. Megan Roe is our second intern.  Megan is currently studying Art History at the University of South Carolina.  Megan first became involved with 701 CCA thro...

My Experience as an Intern at 701 CCA

I graduated with a BFA in printmaking from USC in 2013.  I've been out of college for a few years and I wasn't happy with my current job prospects.  After looking into master's programs in arts administration, I contacted Hannah, the director at 701 CCA, about volunteering in order to get some experience for my resume and a better idea of what I want to do.  When I met Hannah, she told me about the internship and encouraged me to apply. The internship at 701 has been a great experience.  I've been able to get firsthand experience in what goes on behind the scenes at a nonprofit arts organization.  The most interesting part was working with Janet Orselli to install her re:Visions exhibition.  It was exciting to see the gallery come together and to help with the opening reception at the end.  I've gotten to work on marketing, social media outreach, grant writing, gallery installation, and an event.  Not only has this significantly helped my resu...
