My Experience at 701 CCA

Before I applied for this internship, I wasn't familiar with 701 Center for Contemporary Arts. I had passed by the 701 Whaley building for years, unaware of that there was an art gallery hidden within. After doing some research, I realized how involved 701 CCA is with the local arts community, as well as the arts community around the South. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I decided to apply and take a chance. I am glad I did, since this 3-month internship has given me some great experiences.

Previously, I never thought about how much planning and work is done behind the scenes for an art gallery. The workload flows pretty steadily: When one exhibition is done it’s time for de-install, then installation. This is pretty obvious, but what isn’t is how an art gallery on the second floor of a building manages to get a life-size painting of a polar bear into the gallery, when the painting itself doesn’t fit into the building’s elevators (It was a bear to carry, literally). Installation and de-installation gave me more confidence working with my hands- particularly with a power drill. I also worked on MailChimp, occasionally putting together an email for an event or a newsletter for an exhibition. These opportunities helped me develop my writing skills, in addition to giving me general experience with the MailChimp software.

Another great part about interning at 701 CCA was interacting with the artists while installing and de-installing their work. As a Media Arts major, it was inspiring to see the different creative processes that artists underwent to create their work. Being able to speak to most of these artists personally was another great opportunity to learn how different people approach similar ideas or problems.

Lastly, I was able to develop useful skills for my career while I interned at 701 CCA: I was able to take event photos and even put together a video for the 2019 South Arts Exhibition, on top of designing some promotional materials for various events. Hannah is very understanding and tries to shape the internship into a meaningful experience for each intern, based on their skills and interests. Ultimately, I’m grateful for the experience and for how much I’ve learned within the short period I’ve worked at 701 CCA.

Meet Your Interns

Our first intern is Rachel Saran! She is currently a student at University of South Carolina studying Philosophy and Art History. Rachel first got experience at 701 CCA by volunteering through the installation of the SC Fellows exhibit. Her focused interests in the intersection of law, philosophy, and art have allowed her to work on different behind-the-scenes projects at 701 CCA involved in the logistics of running a gallery. Rachel's interests in the operational tasks around the gallery have given her a chance to work with the installations, policies and grants, and assisting in operating events and receptions! Rachel hopes to continue to volunteer at 701 CCA past the expiration of the internship, as she feels that 701 CCA has afforded her uniquely important learning experiences she can carry through her career. Megan Roe is our second intern.  Megan is currently studying Art History at the University of South Carolina.  Megan first became involved with 701 CCA thro...

Summer at 701 CCA

701 Center for Contemporary Art has been working nonstop all summer to create a series of fun, interactive, and educational experiences when it comes to the art world. 701 CCA held a concert, an artist talk, two receptions and exhibitions, and, by the end of the summer, held six kids workshops. This internship truly has been such an eye-opening experience, and each of us has gained so much knowledge in several areas in the art world. I never will take for granted just strolling into a gallery now and seeing all the artwork, and not appreciate all the labor that goes into how the artwork just "appears" there. This summer has been quite a whirlwind, but working for a nonprofit art gallery has truly been rewarding. I really have enjoyed knowing I have played a role, even if it may be a small one, in someone else's enjoyment, education, and entertainment. I hope the pictures below give you a small insight into the behind the scenes of our internship so far this summer. ...

My Experience as an Intern at 701 CCA

I graduated with a BFA in printmaking from USC in 2013.  I've been out of college for a few years and I wasn't happy with my current job prospects.  After looking into master's programs in arts administration, I contacted Hannah, the director at 701 CCA, about volunteering in order to get some experience for my resume and a better idea of what I want to do.  When I met Hannah, she told me about the internship and encouraged me to apply. The internship at 701 has been a great experience.  I've been able to get firsthand experience in what goes on behind the scenes at a nonprofit arts organization.  The most interesting part was working with Janet Orselli to install her re:Visions exhibition.  It was exciting to see the gallery come together and to help with the opening reception at the end.  I've gotten to work on marketing, social media outreach, grant writing, gallery installation, and an event.  Not only has this significantly helped my resu...
